Program Overview

This interprofessional collaborative transition to practice program is brought to you by UPMC Hanover and the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. It serves as an introductory course to cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery as an APP.

Intended Audience

This course is for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) hired within UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) who are new graduates or those with less than 1-year experience in cardiology or CT surgery.

Start Date and Duration

This program is flexible and can accommodate a demanding schedule. The full program is limited to 12 weeks.

Cost

Waived for all those who enroll.

Type of Certificate or CEU Offered

A Certificate of Completion is granted from the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and CME will be provided.

Program Goals

This program will:

  • Provide a foundation in cardiology for UPMC HVI APPs
  • Provide a basis for ongoing professional education and clinical practice in the UPMC HVI
  • Orient the APP to the basic pillars in the HVI and role of the OAPP within UPMC
  • Facilitate onboarding and education within HVI concurrent to orientation within the business unit of hire.
Participant Expectations and Components

To complete the program successfully, participants are expected to fulfill the following:

  • Complete all program self-assessments (pre/post evaluations) and module tests with an 80% or greater pass rate
  • Participate in the online components of the course
  • Complete required reading
  • Participate in experiential learning
  • Meet outlined deadlines in the course schedule

The program is organized into 12 modules, which will be completed over a 12-week course. It is self-paced learning with realistic deadlines. Each module will have pre-recorded videos and required reading broken down into manageable segments allowing the clinician to continue to work within the HVI. Some modules require experiential learning which will be arranged and scheduled by the APPs direct supervisor. Meaningful interactions and network opportunities with colleagues and HVI leadership are built into the modules. The curriculum includes testing to assess comprehension of the course topics within each module.

"Chelsey Goodbrod headshot"

Chelsey Goodbrod, PA-C and lead faculty specializes in cardiology and is certified as a physician assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She practices at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and is affiliated with UPMC Hanover and UPMC Memorial. Ms. Goodbrod earned her master's at Towson University. 

"Lisa Henry"

Lisa M. Henry, DNP, CRNP and lead faculty for Cardiology specializes in cardiology and is a certified nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She practices at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and is affiliated with UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Passavant, and UPMC Jameson. She has her Doctorate in Nurse Practice and her master's degree in Nursing from Carlow University. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

"Katie Lee Scollon heashot"

Katie Lee Scollon, PA-C and lead faculty for CT Surgery specializes in cardiothoracic surgery and is a certified physician assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She practices at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and is affiliated with UPMC Mercy, UPMC Passavant, UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside. She completed her physician assistant at Gannon University. 

"Amy Haller headshot"

Amy L. Haller, MPAS, PA-C, MBA and lead faculty for OAPP is the director of the Center for Advanced Practice Education in the UPMC Office of Advanced Practice Providers. She earned her Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Physician Assistant Studies degrees from Duquesne University, completed a Post-Graduate Surgical Residency for Physician Assistants at Yale University/Norwalk Hospital, and earned a master's degree in Business Administration from Chatham University with a concentration in Healthcare Management. Her research interests include interprofessional education and the professional development of health care practitioners.
