Program Overview

The  UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) APP Cardiology Fellowship provides a foundation or core knowledge base in cardiology for HVI advanced practice providers with a focus on new graduates and those who are new to cardiology. The 9-month program will provide a basis for ongoing professional education and clinical practice in the HVI, and will provide both didactic and experiential learning opportunities. The fellowship includes educational modules with recorded lectures from content experts and assigned scholarly reading. The didactic portion of the fellowship is heavily weighted in the first 12 weeks and designed to allow for congruent onboarding, orientation, and increased clinical practice as learning and skills progress throughout the Fellowship.

Intended Audience

This course is for Advanced Practice Providers (APP) hired within Pittsburgh who are new graduates or those with less than 1-year experience in cardiology or CT Surgery.

Start Date(s) and Duration

This program is flexible and can accommodate a demanding schedule. Participants will complete all 14 modules within a 9-month timeframe.

Course is provided with rolling online registration.

Cost

Waived for all those who enroll.

Type of Certificate or CEU Offered

A Certificate of Completion is granted from the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and CME will be provided.

Program Goals
  • Provide a foundation in cardiology for HVI APPs

  • Provide a basis for ongoing professional education and clinical practice 

  • Orient the APP to the basic pillars in the HVI

Participant Expectations and Components

To complete the program successfully, participants are expected to fulfill the following:

  • Complete all program self-assessments (pre/post evaluations) and module tests with an 80% or greater pass rate
  • Participate in the online components of the course
  • Complete required reading
  • Participate in experiential learning
  • Meet outlined deadlines in the course schedule

This program is designed with flexibility to accommodate the demanding schedule of active clinicians and is designed in a virtual format with assigned reading and experiential learning.

The program is organized into 14 modules, which will be completed over a 9 month period. It is self-paced learning with realistic deadlines. Each module will have pre-recorded videos and required reading broken down into manageable segments allowing the clinician to continue to work within the HVI. Some modules require experiential learning which will be arranged and scheduled by the APPs direct supervisor. Meaningful interactions and network opportunities with colleagues and HVI leadership are built into the modules. The curriculum includes testing to assess comprehension of the course topics within each module.

Lisa M. Henry, DNP, CRNP and Lead Faculty for Cardiology, specializes in cardiology and is a certified nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She practices at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and is affiliated with UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Passavant, and UPMC Jameson. She has her Doctorate in Nurse Practice and her master's degree in Nursing from Carlow University. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Katie Lee Scollon, PA-C and Lead Faculty for CT Surgery, specializes in cardiothoracic surgery and is a certified physician assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She practices at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute and is affiliated with UPMC Mercy, UPMC Passavant, UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside. She completed her physician assistant at Gannon University.

Amy L. Haller, MPAS, PA-C, MBA and Lead Faculty for OAPP is the director of the Center for Advanced Practice Education in the UPMC Office of Advanced Practice Providers. She earned her Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Physician Assistant Studies degrees from Duquesne University, completed a Post-Graduate Surgical Residency for Physician Assistants at Yale University/Norwalk Hospital, and earned a master's degree in Business Administration from Chatham University with a concentration in Healthcare Management. Her research interests include interprofessional education and the professional development of health care practitioners.
