Tuition Scholarship

As leaders of this course, we recognize that every individual has their own “distance traveled,” which represents lived experience, including the barriers and challenges they have overcome to reach their personal and professional goals.

"Distance traveled” is unique to each individual and often includes circumstances we are born into or that occur early in our lives that continue to affect us as adult professionals.

One major factor in “distance traveled” is intergenerational mobility: A person’s ability to access opportunities to obtain a high-quality education and their career, income and wealth goals are directly influenced by their family or foster care upbringing (including such factors as parental income, culture, thoughts/beliefs and others) and demographics (race, class and gender).

Additionally, individuals of minoritized gender identities, sexual orientations, ability/disability statuses, national origins, and other identities, backgrounds and experiences often face significant disadvantages as they pursue their goals.

Through this scholarship, we are using the privilege of financial resources to ease the path to leadership for as many of our colleagues as we can. We ask anyone registering in this course to consider applying for this scholarship, but keep in mind your current resources and only apply if you are in need of financial assistance with this course.

How to Apply for the APP Tuition Scholarship

  1. Using 500 words or less, inform us how your “distance traveled” has contributed to where you are today–and how the APP Leadership course will help propel you to reach your next goals.
  2. Email your submission as an attached Word document to APPLeadershipCourse@pitt.edu by the end of the day on January 15 (Spring cohort) or July 1 (Fall cohort).
    1. Three scholarships for the full course tuition will be offered for fall and spring.
Testimonials

Adanma Okereh, CNM - UPMC

“I was hearing from the other people and the other participants about what their lived experiences were and how it has shaped them as advanced practitioners. I have always known about injustices but in taking this course, it has opened my eyes to the injustices and inequality that affect patients and providers. I have decided to be an advocate for positive change and to be an ally for those who need it most, and the course has built up my skills to do so.”

Michael Pippi, PA-C - UPMC

"This course will challenge what you believe is your leadership style and equip you with the tools to pivot as a leader in a diverse clinical or educational setting. This course will also expose the learner to experts in multiple disciplines of leadership from clinical, health informatics and academia. The course challenged my previous leadership style and challenged me to be introspective as a leader and a person."

Laura Abels, RN, DNP - Akron Children's Hospital in Akron, Ohio

“The course has everything very intentionally outlined to say, ‘This is the best way that you can learn how to communicate with your folks.’ And then I can model that and teach it to them so that they can use it with and among others. I am very excited now to be able to recommend it to our new APP leads because I think it is exactly what they need to start. Content and concepts from some of my presentations or programming led me to tell my mentees that if you like this type of content, you should consider this full APP course at Pitt.”

Gina Lechene, NP, DNP - UPMC

"Furthering my education has been on my mind the last 3-4 years, however I was intimidated to start my doctorate because I have four small kids and I didn’t want to lose any time with them. But after enrolling in this course, it got me back into the “swing” of being a professional learner, showed me that I can manage my time for further education, and ultimately gave me the confidence that I can and will complete my doctorate. I am enrolled to begin my doctoral program in June!"

Scholarship Recipient Testimonial: Elisha Peregino, CRNP - Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center

“The curriculum is comprehensive and inclusive of all APPs, which was important to me since I practice alongside many different providers. The self-paced modules allowed me to do the coursework around my work and PhD program schedules. I also found the depth of APP experts and leaders paired with an interactive forum to be exciting and it has contributed to my personal and professional growth.”
